MovieBob Reviews DUNKIRK 2017

first_img Is Dunkirk good?Yes. I sincerely wish I’d liked it more, but it’s none the less a perfectly solid military procedural drama that, thanks largely to the inherent subject matter and some great actors, is absolutely worth seeing. What’s it about?“The Dunkirk Evacuation” (also known as “The Miracle at Dunkirk”), a strategic retreat from France back across the English Channel by beleaguered British and Allied forces during the early phase of World War II. It was complicated by geographic inaccessibility and a lack of available warships. Ultimately leading Churchill to order civilian boats from England to mobilize for the rescue while the stranded soldiers held out as best they could.Apart from the history, why is it a big deal? It’s a WWII movie directed by Christopher Nolan, so a lot of his ultra-zealous fans are hoping that this will be the one that wins him the Best Picture Oscar they’ve insisted he’s been robbed of for every movie since Batman Begins.Yeah, people are seriously “into” that guy, huh?It happens – he’s the current unquestioned Film School Bro god-figure, an undeniable auteur, and craftsman of occasionally staggering technical acumen whose catalog nonetheless flatters the Bros baser sensibilities by putting that substantial skill toward infusing artistic credibility into a defiantly macho subject matter like revenge, crime, con-artistry, heists, rocket ships and Batman.Whoa – do you have some kind of issue with Christopher Nolan?Nah, I think he’s terrific. I just also think he’s sometimes hampered by an inability or unwillingness to engage his films on a human/emotional plane. He’s a devout technician overwhelmingly more interested in the hypothetical “blueprints” behind heists, cons or vigilantism than the humanity of his human chess pieces (hence why his best film, Inception, is all about how unrestrained emotions are destructive psychological viruses that ruin attempts to construct a fantasy narrative.) I mean, we’re talking about the filmmaker who once decreed that an aesthetic decision like “Anne Hathaway in high-heels” required a practical, utilitarian explanation.Does Dunkirk overcome that?It tries to. A brutal, enormously complicated, messy-as-hell military operation held in particular reverence in the British national psyche. This subject offers Nolan interlocking clockwork mechanisms to obsess over the inner workings of and real-life, fact-based stakes the humanity of which seem so recognizably built-in. And “goes without saying” apparent that he need not once again flail impotently against the cosmic walls of Murph’s bookcase trying to convince us that “No, really – he understands how human beings work, honest!”The actor’s pick up a lot of the slack. Cillian Murphy is haunting as a rattled shell-shock victim, Kenneth Branagh shows up to deliver what might be his most naturalistic and understated performance ever, Tom Hardy is essentially auditioning to replace the lions on the Royal Arms of England as an RAF ace gliding on fumes to stay airborne long enough to fend off the Nazi fighter planes and Mark Rylance as the civilian yacht captain who damn near shows up wearing an “I’M THE SOUL OF THE MOVIE” t-shirt gamely commits to the Herculean task of making a Nolan film feel almost humanistic and… kind of pulls it off.I’ve heard the timeline is weird – what’s up with that? The narrative divides into three separate narrative tracks for land, sea, and air. One storyline following a group of soldiers scrambling to survive on the beach, another centered on middle-class father and son yacht crew making their way across the channel to join the rescue effort and a third tracking a pair of Royal Air Force pilots striving to provide cover-fire for their mates on the ground. However, each story is proceeding on its own separate timescale, and they don’t fully “synchronize” until the very end: The “Land” storyline takes place over about a week, the “Sea” portion is one day, and we’re really only up with “Air” for an hour. That sounds confusing…It is, especially if you blink near the start and miss the title cards that clue us in that this is what’s happening. But when the bulk of your film is dialogue-free depictions of harrowing rescues, boat-sinkings, plane-crashes, young soldiers starving, shivering, drowning, being pinned-down by gunfire… you’d have to be made of stone yourself NOT to get wrapped up in it. The obvious functionality of expanding and contracting the different timelines to make everything feel uniformly immediate and thrilling is always apparent, and (again, thank the cast on this one) it ends up connecting when it needs to.Is it really only rated PG-13?Yes, and while that doesn’t “ruin” it as a war film, it’s hard not to feel like things are a little too bloodless and sterile to be truly immersive in this case.Do you recommend it?Absolutely. I don’t think it’s a masterpiece, but it works where it needs to and the individual moments that need to work really, really work. Plus, whatever else can be said about Nolan his technical skills are second to none, and every frame of it unquestionably deserves to be seen on the biggest screen you can find.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. 11 Indie Games We Want To See On The Switch

first_img ‘Star Wars Pinball’ Has Your Favorite Brand in Ball Form‘Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’ Was Final Mission From Late Nintendo President Stay on target Of all the stereotypes about Nintendo, one of the most enduring has been the belief that their consoles are only worth buying for first-party games. And certainly in past generations that was mostly true – how many Wii games were third-party shovelware compared to the Mario and Zelda entries? But starting with the Wii U and moving forward to the Switch, the big N has started to loosen the reigns a little bit for smaller developers, resulting in numerous exciting indies finding a new home on the hybrid platform.Recent weeks have seen the release of games like World of Goo and The Binding of Isaac for the Switch, and in the future we can expect indie titles like Mini Metro and 2064: Read Only Memories to hit the system. All this small-game goodness has inspired us to put together a list of lesser-known games that we home get the same treatment.CupheadThe run and gun platformer genre got its start on the original NES with Capcom’s Mega Man games, and we’d be very surprised if 2017’s breakout indie hit didn’t make its way to the Switch sooner or later. Cuphead has a window of exclusivity on Windows and Xbone, but when that contract’s up it’s only logical that the devs will want to wring every penny they can out of their painstakingly hand-drawn art. But this one’s more than just a pretty face – the difficulty is finely tuned and there’s a wealth of power-ups and modifiers you can equip to give yourself more challenge – or less, if that’s what you’re into.Dead CellsRetro-styled games do well on Nintendo platforms – just look at Shovel Knight – but Dead Cells has a lot more going for it than mere nostalgia. The bone-hard side-scrolling roguelike is a great distillation of some of today’s hippest trends. As you progress through dungeons, you pick up a wide variety of weapons with unique effects, bonuses and drawbacks and use them to slaughter the bizarre beasts that hinder you. As with any great roguelike, each run feels different, forcing you to really learn the systems to survive. The developer has dropped hints about a possible Switch release, so our fingers are crossed.Heat SignatureThis PC indie hit seems perfect for the Switch’s unconventional controls and mobile capability. Playing something like a Hotline Miami with considerably more tactical depth, you control a group of mercenaries taking on jobs in deep space that can easily cascade into all-out chaos. Every mission seems different, giving you a wide variety of weapons and gadgets to solve problems your way. It’s nail-bitingly hard, surprisingly funny and eminently replayable. Porting it to the Switch might be a tough job for the small team – it’s still in Early Access – but it would definitely be worth it.SpelunkyOne of the most lauded indie games of all time, Spelunky‘s mix of airtight side-scrolling platforming and roguelike exploration through randomly generated caverns made it a massive hit across multiple platforms, including the PS Vita, PS3 and PS4. It hasn’t wound up on any Nintendo system yet, though, which is a little perplexing as it feels in many ways like a strange synthesis of Metroid and Mario. There’s a sequel coming sometime this year, but they’ve only announced it for PC and PS4. Surely being able to delve into caves on the go is a worthwhile thing to pursue?Rain WorldAdult Swim dropped this long-awaited tale of exploration and survival on PC and PS4 last year, and we haven’t heard any rumblings about ports since then. This one is probably the most polarizing game on the list, with players either loving or hating its uncompromising style. As a “slugcat,” a weird little creature with few defenses against predators, you must fill your belly and get to shelter before the toxic rains come each night, contending with a complex ecosystem that really isn’t interested in your survival. It’s a compelling and brave take on the Metroidvania concept that deserves more exposure.Slime RancherNintendo has made their bones by caring about casual players as well as the hardcore, and sometimes you just want to sort of bliss out and perform repetitive tasks in a candy-colored world while numbers go up. Few indie games scratch that itch quite like Slime Rancher, which casts you as an astronaut who travels to a faraway planet to care and feed a flabbergasting variety of cute little slimes. By feeding them different stuff, they evolve and morph into all sorts of critters with different personalities. It’s gently addictive and a perfect choice for the Switch.Keep Talking And Nobody ExplodesThe Switch was definitely sold as a social gaming experience, and one of the most compelling multiplayer games of recent years would do great on the portable platform. The basic gimmick of Keep Talking And Nobody Explodes is simple: one player must defuse an on-screen bomb, but they don’t have any idea how to do it. The other players have access to a detailed bomb-disposal manual, but they can’t touch the bomb. What results is a wild and frenzied cooperative experience that’s unlike anything else the system has to offer.Hidden FolksThis beautiful and charming experience is like “Where’s Waldo” given a shot of mutant growth hormone. Developers Adriaan de Jongh and Sylvain Tegroeg created a hand-drawn universe teeming with life and set gamers loose to discover everything they could inside it. Hidden object games got a bum rap due to PC shovelware, but Hidden Folks is something different – it’s overflowing with personality and charm and would be a great addition to Nintendo’s stable. Porting it from iOS to the Switch’s touchscreen seems like a pretty simple proposition, but we’re not codemasters so we can’t say for sure.Butt Sniffin’ PugsTaking inspiration from Animal Crossing, quirky indie Butt Sniffin’ Pugs lets one or two players morph into squish-faced canines and sets them free to explore a huge and detailed park stocked with humans, other dogs, birds and plenty of stuff to sniff. The developers have demoed the game using a bespoke controller shaped like a huge tennis ball with a dedicated “sniff” button, which lets you learn new abilities from your pug buddies. It’s a sweet and funny game that would land right in the sweet spot for Nintendo’s audience.Caves Of QudVisually low-fi and complicated as hell, Caves of Qud doesn’t seem like a natural fit for a Nintendo system. But this deep, bizarre role-playing adventure actually hearkens back to the earliest days of the company’s software, where games weren’t terribly concerned with being “friendly” and depended on the grit and gumption of players to work out their secrets. And there are a lot of secrets to be found here. This game is “Nintendo Hard” in the best, truest sense, and although it’s quite a longshot we’d love to be able to tote it around on our Switch, even if the baroque control system needed to be simplified a bunch.UndertaleProbably the most beloved indie game of the last decade, Toby Fox’s Undertale takes major inspiration from the big N’s classic Earthbound, but creates a role-playing experience that’s quirky and unique. As a lost child in a mysterious underground world, you encounter dogs, robots and other creatures. The big gimmick – that you don’t have to kill anyone to complete the game – manifests in the unique combat system that features action-based dodging coupled with negotiation, conversation and more. It’s already on Sony platforms so the Switch shouldn’t be any more difficult.center_img Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.last_img read more

Scientists Successfully Grow Neanderthal Minibrains in Petri Dish

first_imgStay on target Watch: Dolphin Leaps Feet Away From Unsuspecting SurferNASA Says 2 Asteroids Will Safely Fly By Earth This Weekend Researchers have long been looking for clues about one of our closest evolutionary relatives — Neanderthals. Our now-extinct kin has shifted from a presumed earlier form, to a close cousin, to… well still a close cousin, but one that we got a little too close to. Still, even though a good portion of scientists who study the topic now consider neanderthals and humans sister subspecies, there’s still a lot of differences between the two. The brain, in particular, is of prime concern as it… y’know, is kind of the whole thing with us apes. So, to learn more about the development of the Neanderthal brain, as well as what it was actually capable of, scientists have done the truly unbelievable — grown miniature brains of our ancient family. As Science Mag reports in an exclusive, the unity of three bleeding-edge fields — including CRISPR, organs built from stem cells, and the fully sequenced Neanderthal genome — has allowed Alysson Muotri and her lab to pull off an exceptional feat. The work has yet to be published, but it was presented earlier this work at a conference for the University of California, San Diego, where Muotri is a geneticist. In essence, the team used stem cells created with neanderthal into small, pea-sized organs that resemble the cortex, or outermost layer of the brain. The hope is that the team will understand how different regions of the Neanderthal brain fit together, and how they would affect its cognition. This is done by comparing the structures to similar mini-brains made with human DNA to understand where and how they differ.“We’re trying to recreate Neanderthal minds,” Muotri says.To be clear, this is quite far from a full brain. We aren’t (probably) making conscious minds in Petri dishes. These organoids represent a very early stage of brain development, far from anything that could be expected to actually produce thought. Others, including Svante Paabo, director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig and one of the researchers that first sequenced the Neanderthal genome, noted that even the genetics of the project has plenty of hurdles to overcome. “Organoids are far from being able to tell us how adult brains function,” Paabo said, noting that there could be plenty of unintended mutations. “There are lots of control experiments to do, and then I’m quite hopeful we’ll overcome those doubts.”On a much creepier note, though, Muotri, in time, hopes to jack mini human brains into crab-like robots and pit them against robots run by Neanderthal organoids. So… that’s a sentence.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.last_img read more

Whats Left to Learn About Nintendo Switch Online

first_imgStay on target Over a year and a half into its lifespan, the Nintendo Switch has established itself pretty nicely. If you pick one up today, you aren’t an early adopter testing out the waters but an informed consumer buying into a proven ecosystem. The back library is quite substantial with hits like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, and the recent Octopath Traveler. And it’ll only get more fleshed out this holiday with Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu/Eevee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. However, there’s still one major part of the Nintendo Switch that’s currently making it feel more like an unfinished prototype than a wildly successful modern game console: the online system. The Switch will feature the first paid Nintendo online system, and after being delayed from a nebulous late 2017 launch, Nintendo is now insisting the service will launch this September. We assumed we’d get more details during the 9/6 Nintendo Direct, but that video was understandably pushed back due a tragic earthquake in Japan. So we’re still somewhat in the dark as to what Nintendo Switch Online even is, even though it launches in just a few weeks! Here’s what we do know. When Nintendo Switch Online goes live, users will need to subscribe in order to keep playing most online multiplayer Nintendo Switch games, including favorites like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Tennis Aces. Prices range from $4 for a single month to a $35 yearly family plan split amongst eight users. It’s pretty generous, but the common assumption is that because of Nintendo’s spotty history with online services, the cheaper price compared to Xbox and PlayStation will also reflect a more modest set of features. After all, users will still be forced to use that dumb mobile app for voice chat, unless they’re playing Fortnite.Beyond online play, subscribers will gain access to quality of life features like cloud save back ups (as there is currently no way to backup Switch game save files) and discounts on eShop purchases. Most exciting, but perplexing, to Nintendo fans though is the library of classic games. Although old games thrive on Switch, there’s no actual Virtual Console service letting you buy past Nintendo hits. Instead, Switch Online subscribers can play a selection of NES games like Dr. Mario and Balloon Fight with added online co-op.And that’s really it for what we know. Although Nintendo continues to remind us of the existence of this service, they’ve yet to provide more firm details. Everything else is just fan speculation. Will they finally ditch the mobile app for actual headsets? Will the servers be more stable now that we actually have to pay for them? Will this truly be the Netflix for classic games subscription service we’ve always dreamed of? Will Nintendo add more NES games along with SNES, N64, Game Boy, and even Gamecube titles? These are all questions worth answering, and ideally questions Nintendo would’ve addressed already. But the other possibility is that Nintendo hasn’t detailed more about online because they’ve already said everything that will be there, at least at launch. They’ve showed their hand. They’re self-aware enough to realize they don’t have much history to make big ambitious online promises. So they’re charging a relatively small fee for relatively safe features. It sucks to make this shift after months of free online play, but folks will totally pay pennies a day to play Smash Bros. online and get some portable NES games. The rescheduled Nintendo Direct should be hitting any day now. There’s already news starting to leak from it like the retitled Yoshi’s Crafted World. So any lingering questions about Nintendo Switch Online should (hopefully) be resolved soon. Nothing is ever “finished” these days, hardware or games, but considering how awesome the Switch otherwise is it would be nice for Nintendo to at least tick this box at last. For more on Nintendo Switch check out this nifty Luigi’s Mansion Labo mod and cool indie games to play before Smash Bros.Buy it now!Nintendo SwitchProtect Your Nintendo Switch With These Awesome CasesLet us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey. ‘Star Wars Pinball’ Has Your Favorite Brand in Ball Form‘Super Smash Bros.
