Who will be super … Tuesday

Rice University political scientist Mark Jones is available to discuss the candidates’ current standing in the Republican race for the White House.Jones said that Tuesday is Romney’s chance to once and for all eliminate any doubt that he will be the Republican nominee in the fall. However, Jones added that a Santorum victory in the day’s marquee Ohio primary coupled with victories in Oklahoma, Tennessee and one or more caucus states would bolster his campaign and simultaneously suggest that the nomination race will last through at least the end of April.“Romney has a chance on Tuesday to lock down his hold on the GOP nomination,” Jones said. “If he fails to do so, he still is almost certainly going to be the Republican nominee in the fall, but to garner the GOP nomination he will be forced to engage in a state-by-state battle with his Republican opponents for at least two more months — time and money which he would much prefer to spend focusing on his November opponent, President Barack Obama.”Jones, who is the chair of political science at Rice and a fellow at Rice’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, is regularly quoted nationally about American and Texas politics and has been closely following the 2012 GOP race for the White House.
